BT ArtBox project supported by Allen Signs

Once a familiar sight on the streets of Britain, the traditional red telephone box has almost been consigned to history â€" but it’s about to experience something of a revival.  Lincoln-based signmaker and vehicle livery specialist Allen Signs has been appointed to work on a new project launched by BT which will see leading artists from around the world restyle that much loved icon of British design.

To mark the 25th anniversary of Childline, BT will provide each artist or a designer with a full-size, fibreglass replica of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott-designed original K6 telephone kiosk.  The so-called BT ArtBoxes will be on display in high-profile locations around London between now and 16th July before being auctioned off at a VIP gala auction at the National Portrait Gallery on 18th July to raise funds for BT's long-time charity partner.

One of the designers taking part in the BT ArtBox project is fashion designer Giles Deacon, who appointed Allen Signs to vinyl wrap the kiosk with his artwork. His BT Artbox is now on display in Carnaby Street, London.

Following the success of this job the company on Whisby Way in Lincoln, which last year celebrated its 45th anniversary, received a further nine more kiosks to work on, including those belonging to cartoonist and illustrator Steven Appleby and designer Julien Macdonald.

Managing Director David Allen says it’s an honour to be involved in the project.  “We’re delighted to be working for such well known clients and on a project of this magnitude for obvious reasons; however, the fact that the proceeds from the sale of the boxes will raise vital funds for such a worthwhile cause makes it even more rewarding.”

“The phone boxes will be springing up all over London and we can’t wait to see the others we have worked on on display. I’m sure it will give all the staff here a great sense of pride and as it’s the Diamond Jubilee year I’m sure they’ll attract even more attention.”

To transform the replica kiosks Allen Signs printed the artwork onto vinyl using their new HP Designjet L26500 which can handle a maximum width of 1.55m.  They also used HP Latex Inks which are ideal for wide and super-wide applications and are water-based, thus reducing the impact of printing on the environment.

printMAX Discovery Days prove a hit

With the promise of enlightening visitors of the various - and in some cases unique - print applications possible with a Roland, printMAX had no problem in driving up visitor numbers and overall interest in the concept.

June 12th-14th saw printMAX teaming up with Roland to host a three day nationwide event, encouraging visitors to not only take an active interest in the Roland technology but also to educate on how it might benefit a business.

The choice to hold a ‘Discovery Day’ rather than a run of the mill open day was an obvious call for printMAX's managing director, Michael Bolton. “Our business is all about giving our customers the best start with their Roland printer, whether that’s at the beginning of a start-up company or as a sizeable investment from an existing customer. The advice and support each customer receives is always at the highest level and the Discovery Days were simply an extension of this, offering personal advice and opinions alongside the technical and expert knowledge that Roland provides.”

Each day began with a short introduction from Roland focusing on the range of printers before moving on to the various ways the printer can be used and the vast range of products that can be printed with each range. Printers covering the entire Roland product range were available for demonstration, from the new desktop printer BN-20 (the introductory piece of equipment and one of Roland’s latest releases) to the LEJ-640 (the most advanced printer offered as part of the VersaUV range). Along with the printMAX team, Roland representatives were also on hand to offer their own personal advice on the various printers and how best to maximise their use.

Responses to the Discovery Days were positive.  Andy Hermon visited the third and final day event hosted at the Aldershot Roland showroom and commented, “thanks to printMAX at the Discovery Day in Aldershot, I found the information useful and great food for thought. It has certainly broadened my horizons with new ideas on my next purchase.“

Whilst visitors took a lot away from the Discovery Days, the benefits for printMAX were seen immediately.  printMAX's sales manager, Chris Martin, added, “The initial response has been fantastic, with on-the-day enquiries already transforming into sales and future leads. Whilst these days were not sales driven, we are already seeing the rewards of offering that extra bit of advice that the visitor may not have received elsewhere.”

With some exciting summer offers to be announced later in the month, printMAX hopes to continue to ‘exceed expectations’ and continue its reign as Roland’s most successful authorised dealer.

Royal Academy Schools’ students use Epson printers to push artistic boundaries

The Royal Academy Schools are staging their annual exhibition of final year postgraduate students’ work profiling the work of 16 artists until 1st July. Several of the works on display include those produced using large-format Epson printers and projectors, accessible to the students in the on-site Epson Digital Media Suite. Epson provides the very latest in large format printers and other technologies to the RA Schools so students can experiment with different materials and designs and to produce their final artwork.

The Royal Academy Schools offer the UK’s only three-year, full-time, postgraduate course and is regarded as a Centre of Excellence in the art world. The graduation exhibition provides visitors with a rare opportunity to view the finished artwork across a range of media from painting to photography, sculpture, digital print and film.

All the students have worked with Epson’s large format printer and/or projectors at some time during their course. Included in this year’s exhibition are:

  • Chris Mew: who has combined digital printing with painting to produce atmospheric panoramic canvas pieces created by feeding raw cotton canvas through the Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 printer.
  • Pio Abad: has created an installation using the large-format Epson Stylus Pro GS6000, the Stylus Pro 11880 and Stylus Pro 9900 printers. Often using high gloss papers and vinyl transfer materials, his works often also include found objects, clothing, posters, photos and prints.
  • Jolanta Rejs: has used Epson’s printers to create transparent films of details of engravings by Albrecht Durer, which she then uses as guides to produce atmospheric hand cut printing blocks.
  • Adele Morse: has used Epson technology to help create her installation which includes her study of the mythical beast “Orang Pendek”. Within the installation is a mock gift shop selling merchandising celebrating this creature produced on the whole range of Epson printers, including T-shirts, badges, rulers, pens and posters. Surrounding this are two projected film “mockumentaries” that fill the entire exhibition space via the  EB- Z8000, one of brightest and technologically advanced of all Epson’s projectors.

Mark Hampson, Tutor of Material Processes, Royal Academy says, “The RA Schools graduation show demonstrates the wonderful creative outcomes of our collaborative relationship with Epson. All the students have worked in the Epson Digital Media Suite while researching, preparing and producing their artwork and their involvement with Epson technologies has influenced their final show tremendously.”

Nick White, Sales Manager, ProGraphics adds, “As a leading supplier of technology to the fine art market, Epson is very keen to support young artists.  Through our partnership with the Royal Academy Schools, we are able to offer the students the opportunity to test Epson’s equipment to its limit and experiment with their creative ideas.”

Is 'greening' your print business affordable? Or even worth the effort?

Marcus Timson, co-founder of the EcoPrint Show, has penned a response to Peter French's article questioning just how a business does go 'green' whilst remaining profitable.  He says:

"I read with interest Peter French’s well-written opinion piece about his experience in selling sustainable print.   It inspired me to write a few things down, hopefully to both encourage him â€" and others like him â€" not to lose hope and also to encourage the sign industry to attend the upcoming EcoPrint Show to find some answers to the questions he was posing.

I completely agree with Peter that in order for sustainability to work properly, buyers are in need of education. And I don’t mean to be patronising to print buyers, but they are not paid to think about the overall value of what they are buying. They are in jobs that are focused on them achieving the lowest possible price.

I agree that we should, where possible, buy locally. This is not because I am against competition, but because it makes sense on a number of levels. I hate it when I hear from Peter that he is losing out to businesses in China. These businesses will almost certainly not be producing sustainable print and the energy wasted to get the product out to the UK is very wrong indeed.

It’s a tough one this, and I think tougher for smaller businesses. I can see that Peter is - on the one hand - keen to take a sustainable path forward but - on the other - wondering what the value might be for him and his business. Will it be worth the investment?

Many small businesses sense that this ‘mega-trend’ towards a more eco-friendly society is something propagated by larger corporates and it isn’t necessarily reaching a local level. To some extent, depending on where you are located in the world, he is right.  Sustainability is still primarily a leadership issue. The main-stream is not yet demanding sustainable print. Or at least, they are not prepared to pay more for it.

But it’s a fact that the world’s leading brands and retailers are ‘greening’ their supply chains. For example, Wal-Mart is forcing its suppliers to align with their pledges towards sustainability. This in turn is forcing Unilever and Procter & Gamble to change how they produce their products from tier one manufacturing through to tier two and three â€" and this most certainly includes the print that they buy. So a leadership issue it is and clearly Peter is one of those leaders as he’s rightly asking questions such as those he has poses in his article.

My opinion is that the shift is still occurring and it is the top 15% that are embracing it and integrating it. It doesn’t matter how big your business is, it is the kind of person and the kind of vision that you have. I don’t personally profess to know the answers for Peter but I’m confident that the EcoPrint Show will.

The EcoPrint Show has been developed specifically to address these issues.  It will incorporate sessions from a number of sustainability experts across the globe within consumer companies and retailers, as well as real life case studies from print companies that have made and continue to make a great amount of value and profit from a sustainable print model. They will certainly provide some inspiration and guidance for him if he wants to know more and perhaps learn from their experiences.

All I can say to Peter is that he is certainly asking the right questions. At present, some buyers don’t get it.  Yet.  But when the shift occurs and they have to buy sustainably, they will drop Chinese print like a hot potato. Because they will not want the negative PR of buying toxic, unsustainable product that has no value.

As I write this, I hear that Toshiba has dropped its controversial ‘National No Print Day’ due to pressure from people (like me) who rightly say that print is actually the most sustainable media of all when it is done properly.

So, as the world becomes more conscious of the environment and business is more concerned about continuing to create value, Peter’s business will be positioned well, if he makes at least the kind of inquisitive questions about sustainability he is asking now. It’s a step by step process, and not one he has to suddenly achieve in a small space. But educating your customers is key. They will place a value on your expertise and some, not all, will end up becoming the cornerstones of your business well into the future.

Peter, I hope to see you in Berlin 26-27 September 2012 www.ecoprintshow.com and good luck to you!"

Zund cutter plays key role in BA's Olympic and Paralympic celebrations

A Zund PN M1200 cutting machine, owned and operated by staff in the graphics department at British Airways (BA), has played a key role in the creation of a special fleet of “Dove” aircraft.  The Dove aircraft livery is part of the BA Great Britons programme, celebrating the best of British talent in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The specially designed Dove livery covers the entire aircraft and the Zund PN M1200 machine was used to cut the stencils required for the spray painted project.

Ensuring that the unique design could be successfully applied to the BA fleet of aircraft was a complex task and was assigned to Phil Purbrick, graphics engineer at BA.  He has worked with Zund machines for 18 years and his skill with the Zund PN M1200 and knowledge of the BA fleet ensured that the design could be successfully converted onto the stencils required for the spray painted project.

“The BA Dove aircraft is definitely one of the most intricate projects that I have been involved with.  Knowing that I could rely on the Zund PN M1200 to perform was really important.  It’s never let me down in all these years,” comments Phil.

British Airways replaced its original Zund plotter with the Zund PN M1200 three years ago.  It had retained its previous model, a Zund P1200, for 15 years.  As Dennis Griffiths, BA’s Fleet Logistics Co-ordinator, explains, “Investing in a Zund cutter makes sound business sense as you get an excellent high quality piece of engineering kit and guaranteed service and support from the team at Zund UK.”

The BA Graphics Department is involved in lots of different projects for departments across British Airways, including both aircraft livery and in-house branding and marketing projects.  The BA Graphics team will be working on another London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic project.  The details are presently being kept secret but BA’s Zund PN M1200 will be playing a key part.

EcoPrint announced as latest associate member of Verdigris

EcoPrint has been announced as the latest associate member to support Verdigris, the environmental initiative from graphic arts research group Digital Dots.

Verdigris is a not-for-profit research initiative designed to help printers and their customers understand more about the environmental impact of print media.  The goal is to raise awareness of print’s positive environmental impact through cooperative content development shared with an international network of trade publishers.

With a focus on Retail, Interiors, POP/S, Packaging and Promotional Print, the content for EcoPrint Europe (Berlin, 26th and 27th September 2012) is designed to provide practical answers, guidance and solutions for any business from the world of print that wants to make a strategic investment in sustainability. Featuring practical and inspiring content that focuses on reducing waste, minimising cost and increasing profit, EcoPrint participants will benefit from connecting, discussing and discovering ideas and innovation for successful green print production.

Marcus Timson, director of EcoPrint organiser FM Brooks, says, “We fully support Verdigris’s focus on gathering and disseminating the facts about the environmental impact of specific media products, which is in line with EcoPrint’s position as a forum which will provide print professionals with a defined, practical guide to implementing and enhancing profitability through a sustainable approach to the print business.  Both Verdigris and EcoPrint share the belief that hard, empirical data is essential to achieving this.”

Welcoming EcoPrint Europe’s support, Verdigris founder Laurel Brunner says, “In important respects EcoPrint and Verdigris share the same philosophy about how to prove and promote print’s sustainable credentials, an issue that for the most part industry events have so far addressed in a haphazard fashion.  Too often sustainability has been a sideshow, but EcoPrint Europe puts it centre stage, where it belongs, and where print producers and print consumers can begin to really understand the issues and evaluate suppliers’ offerings.”

As an example what how EcoPrint differs from other events, she cites the EcoPrint Exhibitor Review Committee, which provides an independent review process for the products, services, applications and solutions at the exhibition, ensuring that exhibits are consistent with EcoPrint’s objectives of enhancing awareness of print’s sustainability, low carbon impact and competitiveness.

Launched at drupa in 2008, Verdigris’s aim is to investigate the environmental impact of print media, helping print buyers, printers and publishers evaluate the carbon footprint of different media.  Verdigris provides free research and content to a global network of industry publishers on a regular basis.  Participants in the project can use Verdigris content to educate their printing communities about print’s environmental impact, and to help raise print’s positive profile.  Verdigris contentâ€"which is independently managed by people who know and understand print technologyâ€" explores and analyses the issues facing publishers and printers to help them manage their carbon footprints, while continuing to conduct a profitable business.  Verdigris is also a major contributor to the development of ISO 16759, the standard for measuring the carbon footprint of print media products.

The Verdigris website provides a single point of reference, not only to access Verdigris data and information about other environmental developments, but also for links to other useful environmental websites. The Verdigris site also has a growing list of the world’s printers compliant to ISO 14001, the environmental management standard.

German print company, Druckerei Hanemann, switches to EFI Pace

Druckerei Hanemann, a printing company based in Weil am Rhein-Ötlingen (Germany) has decided to replace its Alphagraph Prinance system with the EFI Pace management system.

The full-service, twelve employee-strong printing company has been supplying printed goods and promotional items of all kinds to its customers for more than 25 years.  On selecting EFI Pace, Druckerei Hanemann's managing director, Fabian Berger, comments, "I decided in favour of EFI Pace because it is an integrated system. You only need to enter data once from price quote all the way through to delivery note and invoice, and it functions quickly and reliably."

He adds, "I am looking forward to improved integration of our Fiery controllers and web-to-print shop with EFI Pace.  Eliminating manual input and direct digital transfer of data minimises errors and streamlines the work process.  As print runs are becoming ever shorter, quote requests are increasing, and delivery times are getting ever shorter, we need to work faster and faster and avoid sources of error.  Pace was an easy decision because as a leading player in the workflow arena, EFI have a strong offering that we will be able to work with for many years, and which benefits from EFI's established support organisation in Germany."

An important advantage is the browser-based nature of EFI Pace.  Every employee can access Pace from his or her PC or Mac workstation without needing any other software.  Berger values being able to work from anywhere and at any time, from any computer with an internet connection.  EFI Pace makes access considerably faster and easier.  For example, during conversations with customers he can easily call up his calculations on the iPad and see exactly how much room there is for negotiation.  EFI Pace can also be installed on hosted servers at an internet provider, saving expensive server and IT systems.

Solutions from Alphagraph such as Prinance will still be developed, supported and sold to existing customers by EFI.  Alphagraph customers on maintenance are eligible for special price discounts on new EFI systems.

For more information on EFI Pace, please visit www.efi.com.

Perfect Colours announced as UK distribution partner for JetMaster display systems

The London based value added reseller of wide format digital printing solutions, Perfect Colours, has announced it has been appointed as a UK distribution partner for the JetMaster display system.

The JetMaster display system is a tough, lightweight gallery wrap that can be completed in minutes, using just a craft knife and a cutting board.  It enables the simple creation of a professional looking finished image that looks exactly like a framed canvas, but is both quicker and cheaper to make.

No special assembly skills are required.  The base is a pre-cut, pre-laminated corrugated board and users just trim and press flat their prints and fold over the edges.   The JetMaster system ensures that there are no bubbles within the image, no untidy corners, no staples and no hooks. A fully assembled JetMaster ‘gallery wrap’ is so light it can be hung from just one tack.

Jason Burroughs, managing director of Perfect Colours, comments, “The JetMaster system is very flexible and allows end users to produce high quality finished output at an amazingly low price point. It matches digital printing for quality and flexibility and offers a simple, cost-effective, premium display option.”

The JetMaster display system ships flat and is currently available in a number of different sizes ranging from 5”x5” up to A3.  There is also an easy to use, low cost RIP for users who want to create a range of displays using - for example - multiple frames to create a Triptych effect.  A range of fine art media is also available including a textured finish which replicates the look of a traditional canvas.

Jason Burroughs adds, “With JetMaster, the days of outsourcing the stretching and fixing of canvases for gallery wraps are over.  Print shops can now offer their customers genuine one-stop shop for finished product.  The RIP software generates extra productivity and flexibility â€" JetMaster is a complete solution to low cost canvas framing without any compromise on quality.”

A video demonstrating how to make up the frames can be found at http://www.perfectcolours.com/finishing/jetmaster-display-systems

For further information, please contact Perfect Colours via email: info@perfectcolours.com or call 0845 680 9000.
