The time is right for Colorific UV Light

Colorific, the high quality, alternative ink supplier, has announced a new ink that enables wide format printer owners to convert their existing solvent printers to a greener UV solution.  Branded Colorific UV Light, the ink will be demonstrated at a number of upcoming international events - including EcoPrint Show, the Viscom events and SGIA - and will be commercially available from November 2012.

Compatible with any Mimaki, Mutoh and Roland wide format machine that use Epson Piezo DX4 and DX5 print head technologies, Colorific UV Light is a hybrid solution which combines the reliability of an eco solvent ink with the print performance of a UV ink.

With the same basic chemical formulation as a standard eco-solvent ink, Colorific UV Light offers superb media adhesion and stunning durability.  However, it has a significantly lower carbon footprint than eco-solvent inks and contains no VOCs.

Shaun Holdom, Business Manager for Colorific, comments, “I believe that Colorific UV Light inks are the next generation in UV ink technology for the wide format market.  They allow print service providers to meet all their customers’ sign and graphics needs.  Plus, as there is no need for secondary lamination or coating, they can also save time and money on every print job.”

He continues, “The printed output is dry, robust and highly abrasion-resistant, yet has the glossy photographic finish achieved with standard solvent printing.”

Colorific’s new Smart UV Lightbar System is critical to the hybrid technology.  The system comprises an external, stand-alone lamp kit which fixes to the front of any compatible wide format printer.  During the printing process, the pigment is fixed to the ink-receiving layer on the media and then a secondary cure â€" using the new system â€" fixes the droplet and provides an immediate cure and cross link on the media.

The printer requires no other modification and the inks are installed like any other ink, requiring a simple flush then a standard ink fill.

Colorific UV Light is available in CMYK, LC, LM as a standard set up for most machines and supplied in 440ml compatible cartridges and the relevant chip.  The ink system is a complete clean hands procedure and requires no additional maintenance other than documented when using the original ink from the machine manufacturer.

Colorific is actively seeking international resellers and partners to promote this ground-breaking new ink to the industry, with Shaun Holdom commenting, “We genuinely believe this ink will create an exciting new after-market for resellers, and a much more attractive price point for users looking to add UV class printing to their print production offering.”

Alwan to unveil OEM strategy at GraphExpo 2012 and announce inaugural partners

Alwan Color Expertise will unveil its new OEM strategy at the GraphExpo 2012, and announce its inaugural partners - Caldera, Compose System and Dubsat.  Representatives of the three OEMs will welcome their customers and visitors on Alwan booth 154 at GraphExpo.

Printing Standards adoption has gained momentum worldwide thanks ISO 12647 and G7. Print Buyers and printers agree today that the files and the prints they deliver should comply with these industry standards.  File and Print conformance to standards is the mission and the technology Alwan has been delivering to the graphic industry since its foundation fourteen years ago.

Now Alwan's recognised vision and highly awarded technologies have received new and strong support from the three industry-innovating manufacturers, Caldera, Compose and Dubsat. All have embraced Alwan's vision on standardised workflows, and have committed to embed Alwan technology in their systems, enabling their customers to produce standardised colours, files and prints with the industry reference technologies.

Elie Khoury, founder and president of Alwan Color expertise is thrilled.  "Those who know Alwan know that Alwan is all about co-operation: human, technical and business co-operation. We are particularly happy today to see that our business approach and ethics are attracting attention of notorious companies such as Caldera, Compose and Dubsat. Their support has enabled us to improve our technologies even further, making them available to a larger number of users, and enabling our partners to improve their systems and offer their users standardised colour, files and prints.”

Joseph Mergui, CEO of Caldera, is looking forward to move the digital printing industry towards printing standards.  "When I met Elie Khoury for the first time in 2008, I knew that one day we would work together. His vision regarding conciliating printing standards and working practices using simple and automated tools made sense to our digital printing industry, but it was too early then. Today, Caldera users want to print to standards and match on their large format printer, customer colours that are printed on other processes, conventional or digital. This is the reason why we decided to join forces with Alwan. Today, we have two joint projects, the first is the very successful Caldera InkPerformer which is the digital printing version of Alwan's recognised and awarded Dynamic Ink Saving Technology. The second is Alwan's G7 certified system DynamicPrinterCalibration that we decided to offer with our next RIP version, and which has been also optimised by our joint teams for large and grand format printers inks, gamuts and substrates."

Tom Sit, CEO of Compose System, adds, "Compose is an Alwan distributor and an OEM partner for Global Graphics Harlequin RIP for years. We have hundreds of satisfied users printing with Alwan and Harlequin technologies worldwide. However these two complementary solutions were separate and available on different platforms. Now, thanks to Alwan, Compose and Global Graphics joint efforts, we have succeeded to integrate Alwan award winning DeviceLink Profile technology in the Harlequin RIP, enabling thousands of additional users to benefit from Alwan's industry reference colour management and standardisation technology within their Harlequin RIP.  This is great news for our market, and great news for us."

Olivier de Pina, Adsend's global product manager, is excited about the services the relationship with Alwan will bring to Adsend’s AdGate users in particular.  "With the global adoption of printing standards, we wanted to offer our ad agency users the ability not just to manage their colours, but to produce standardised colours and files that will print without any problems on any printing process worldwide. After investigating the available technologies and holding discussions with many prepress and printing companies worldwide, it was highly apparent to us that Alwan technology is the standout choice for us and for our customers thanks to its recognised performance and wide adoption. Alwan will be an excellent addition to our existing partners, as this new co-operation will allow Dubsat to provide PDF standardisation services to our users worldwide, with the guarantee that their colours can match regardless of the printer and the printing technology."

Caldera, Compose and Dubsat’s new software and services embedding Alwan technologies will be available to their customers Q4 2012.

SEPIAX announces imminent launch of environmentally-friendly AQ160 printer

SEPIAX Ink Technology GmbH has announced the imminent launch of the AQ160 printer, specifically designed to run the latest generation of SEPIAX Aquares inks, at the EcoPrint Show later this week.  The company has also strengthened the distribution partnership with Reprographic Technology International.

The EcoPrint show in Berlin on 26th and 27th September will see the introduction of a purpose-built roll-to-roll printer, the AQ160, designed to exploit the capabilities of the Sepiax Aquares range of ink.

Following the success of the HP latex printers, the industry is seeing a shift to "green" solutions and a greater awareness of the impact on the environment of harmful solvents, non-recyclable materials and excessive power consumption. Major manufacturers are starting to consider the introduction of  their versions of  water-based, multipurpose, ink. For example, Mimaki launched the LX400 at  Fespa in February of this year.

It was only a matter of time before SEPIAX Ink Technology GmbH, with some 5 years experience in, and a market-leading grasp of, the water-based resin surface-bonding ink technology, brought out a purpose built printer to use the ink for general sign-making and graphical applications.

In the UK a partnership is planned with Reprographic Technology International, a Canadian-based company with global reach supplying parts and consumables to the whole professional digital print sector, encompassing sheet and web fed production print, wide format plan print, labelling and display graphics. This partnership will provide the support needed to develop dealerships in the UK and Europe, with spare parts being held in the UK. This is a natural progression for the company's emergent Print Solutions Division.

Peter Barton, EMEA business director for RTI says, "I have been involved in the fascinating new technology of the Sepiax ink now for a couple of years, and I am excited by this new development in hardware. After various successful modifications to existing solvent printers being used in a range of semi-industrial processes, from the production of skis, flooring, room dividers, credit cards and even coffee mugs, the focus is turned to the signmaker and graphic arts printer, who wants to produce a wide range of media on a dedicated machine. This is where the AQ160 comes in. Built in Germany, the AQ160 is a 1.6metre roll-to-roll printer with specialized heating systems to ensure perfect curing of the SEPIAX Aquares ink. These precisely-controlled heating systems include pre-heat, under-platen heat, post-heat and even an infrared heating device on the carriage. There is also the option of a scanning "super" dryer to assist with speedy drying of highly hydrophobic materials. In spite of the demanding heating requirements the standard machine will consume not much more power than a standard solvent printer. Even the optional superdryer is using infrared scanning technology to minimize power consumption. The use of permanent piezo printheads also reduces costs and the consumption of raw materials."

Karl Ebner, sales and marketing director of SEPIAX says, "The EcoPrint show is the perfect platform for our company since we have been one of the first ones in this business defining 'ecology & green chemistry' as our company's principles. The latest market developments prove that moving away from harmful solvents and reducing power consumption are major steps for the graphics industry. Together with the theme of this show it confirms the direction SEPIAX had already chosen years ago."

Erik Norman, VP of Sales and Marketing for RTI says, "Although we are traditionally seen as a supplier of spare parts and consumables to the digital print sector, the rapid changes in this marketplace are leading to our clients asking us for advice on new print technologies. and this has naturally led to the creation of our Print Solutions Division. We have elected to work with leading print technology companies like SEPIAX who are the driving force behind this resin technology for inks, and you will be seeing other announcements from us regarding more leading-edge technology products, like solutions utilizing Memjet engines. We see these type of products changing the way our clients look at their print methodology."

All will be revealed at the EcoPrint show - the world's first event focused on sustainable print business.

“A lot of feedback for our latest ink improvement came from the industrial segment” adds Franz Aigner, CEO at SEPIAX with responsibility for the company’s product development. “In addition SEPIAX can be seen as the inventor of water-based resin inks for piezo printheads. We now have more than 5 years of experience with this new ink technology. Of course, our leading position helps to develop this technology to the next level while others are only now starting to launch their 1st generation products.”

GPT's Stuart Cole explains ethos behind upcoming Open Days

In the following article, titled "GPT - The only Open Days you will ever need", Stuart Cole explains what unique offerings will be on show at the upcoming events scheduled to take place between 16th and 18th October 2012...

"Printer manufacturers have been really hard at work this year, with an unprecedented number of new machines already launched and more to come soon.  Mimaki, Epson and Canon stand out and it stands to reason that sign and graphics display companies want to see these new printers to find out for themselves exactly what they are capable of and how they can generate more business and more profits.

In my opinion, the Open Days showing the broadest range of new and unique printers are the ones being held at our offices in Reading from 16th to 18th October.

Representatives from GPT and all its manufactures will be present, including Hybrid (Mimaki), Agfa, Canon, Epson, Velmex (Canon/Epson), Shiraz, Wasatch, Amari and MacTac. This means customers can gain the most detailed advice possible, directly from the people who know their products best.

We have incorporated our extensive experience and expertise to develop unique printer offerings based on Mimaki’s market leading technology. The GPT JV34 180 delivers double the print speed of a Mimaki JV33 and cannot be found anywhere else. It is a 1.8m wide printer and incorporates double print heads to deliver the additional speed.  This is what many of our customers have been asking for. It provides all the benefits of the JV33, but much faster, wider and available at incredibly good value.

We have also developed our own range of dye-sublimation printing solutions for the textile and garment printing market. The GPT TPC60, 130 and 160 machines are based on Mimaki’s award-winning integrated printer/cutter range and give customers greater choice than the Mimaki TPC-1000 that is currently the only size (1mtr) available from Mimaki.  These printer/cutters are a great way to get into the dye sublimation market as they allow customers to expand into soft signage while benefiting from using cost effective Mimaki inks and technology.

The GPT Open Days will be the first chance to see many of the new machines in the market from Mimaki, Epson and Canon under one roof. The big news is that the Mimaki JV-400 LX Latex is ready to go. GPT has recently installed the very first production site in the UK and there are more installations ready to go. We are now full steam ahead with this product and we are one of the only companies in the UK with a machine available to view at our offices. The JV-400 LX is now ready for full production and we are looking forward to people coming in to see what it can really their business and their profit line.

Also new is the Epson range of SureColor eco solvent printers, the Epson SC-S30600, SC-S50600 and SC-S70600. The GPT Open Days will be the first time the entire range will be under one roof, showing the 4, 5, 8 and 10 colour versions. These machines have no solvent smell, great print quality, good production speed, 3 year durable print output, and they are so easy to use.  From basic 4 colour right up to the top end 10 colour machines, which include white and metallic ink, the Epson SureColor range covers many bases.

GPT’s Open Days will also be the first time in the UK that visitors can see the brand new range of aqueous ink based printers from Canon. The Canon iPF8400 and iPF9400s are the fastest 44” and 60” aqueous printers on the market. The range includes 5, 8 and 12 colour versions to deliver the quality levels required. I saw these printers at the Canon launch in Germany recently and they demonstrated all the great quality we expect from the current Canon line up. They now have the exciting addition of the very latest Canon Lucia EX inks for the ultimate colour gamut, and at the fastest print speed of any aqueous printer in market today.

The Agfa Anapurna range is currently available from GPT with some unbeatable special offer discounts. The Open Days are an excellent opportunity for customers to see what these printers can do. With 6 colours, and white ink, the Anapurna Mw at just £49,995 is a real bargain, particularly when it’s best discounted price is normally over £65,000. These exclusive deals will allow some companies that may not have wanted to take on the huge investment in production flatbed machines, to ease into the flat sheet business.

We can’t qualify all the other special offerings we will have at this forthcoming open week, but we can quote some examples from our previous open week in May. At that event, customers benefitted from an extra year’s warranty free on some models, free I-Pad 3 on some models, and in some cases both warranty and I-Pad were given!  We also had a raffle for attendees to the open week and offered prizes that included football tickets, and yet another I-Pad 3, as a thank you for just taking the time in turning up.

We will have supportive pricing from some of the manufacturers, which we pass onto customers at the event. The incentive is there for customers to bring their cheque books.  We will also look at part exchanges on your old systems, so we encourage people to bring along photographs of existing equipment to help us provide the best value on what they have to trade.

To further help customers make investments, GPT has a range of finance packages that it can offer from leading brand financiers for both lease rental, and lease purchase, and GPT has its own in-house 10 month deferred payment plan offering too.

As well as all the new, unique and special offer products on show, we can show visitors an unprecedented range of printers to suit all graphics production requirements.  Our Open Days are also an excellent opportunity to learn more about the recently announced printers that are yet to reach these shores.

With GPT, customers can discuss and plan for the new Mimaki UJF6042.  This is a bigger version of the very popular UJF3042HG.  It has a bigger A2 size bed and higher 1800dpi print quality. With white, clear and pre coat like the existing UJF3042, GPT expects this machine in the next 3-4 months.

GPT can also talk about the new Mimaki JFX500 3121. This is Mimaki’s latest big UV cure flat bed (3.1m x 2.1m).  Having seen the machine at an overseas exhibition recently, and with the full production unit being available very soon, GPT believes this machine will be a real killer product. The JFX500 produces 40-60 Sq. mtr. per hour of truly photographic, and hugely impressive print quality. Smaller versions of this stunning printer will follow soon after this launch.

The Mimaki JV400 SUV, with its unique new ink type (SUV) provides a range of exciting benefits. These include no degassing, so immediate usage, and a near indestructible unlaminated print resilience. This machine is expected in the next few months and we wait with bated breath."

Esko ArtiosCAD 12 brings a new dimension to structural packaging design

With the introduction of a new major release of ArtiosCAD, version 12, Esko offers a 'paradigm shift' in packaging design from 2D to 3D. Providing tools for 3D design, editing, rendering and visualisation, ArtiosCAD 12 assures that the viability of a package is discovered further upstream in the supply chain. It also provides new tools for packaging design and process integration to help users gain productivity and increase efficiency.

ArtiosCAD is the flagship structural packaging design editor in Esko's software suite with over 13.000 licenses sold worldwide. “It all starts with structure. The structural design determines the placement of the graphics. The package converting is determined by the structure. Structure and graphics, as well as structure and logistics, are brought together with the use of ArtiosCAD. Only ArtiosCAD offers end-to-end communication for the entire packaging supply chain,” says Richard Deroo, Esko Product Manager, Structural Design. “Our commitment to continuously improve our solutions for our customers help them fulfill increased demand to push more products to market faster, at the lowest cost, in a global market.”

Supporting Esko’s vision of shifting design from 2D to 3D, ArtiosCAD 12 brings customers many time-saving features. It has integrated the latest native 3D file import libraries from Esko’s technology partner, Spatial. This offers a speed improvement of over 50%, which means designers will spend less time waiting to import 3D models. Users will also benefit from the 3D import preview feature, allowing them to select individual parts from a model assembly. This lets the structural designer quickly and automatically build a carton around the imported 3D parts to be packaged.

In addition, ArtiosCAD helps to assemble multi-part designs and displays with a number of new time-savings features. For example, with a single mouse click users can fill a carton, case or tray with the product to be packaged. This saves hours developing multi-part designs. Placement of one design within another is now easier with the new Collision Detection feature, which gives visual feedback when the two designs intersect.

"We have been asking for some of the 3D tools that have found their way into ArtiosCAD 12,” comments Chuck Pomles, Senior Packaging Design Engineer at Premier Packaging Inc. “A lot of the work we do is complex â€" assembled fabricated foam protective packaging for electronics companies. These can have as many as 15-25 unique components. As part of our design work, we create manufacturing assembly drawings (how to build and heat weld the pieces together) and customer packing instructions (how to use the packaging to protect the electronic components). Creating these assemblies in ArtiosCAD 3D could take us from 45 minutes to 1½ hours to do. With the new ArtiosCAD 12 Collision Detection feature, with a click, the components are automatically placed in a box. Using the Collision Detection tool along with the Tab Slot tool, these assemblies now only take 5-15 minutes to create. For the projects we have built using ArtiosCAD 12 thus far, I consistently see a phenomenal 75% savings in time."

To accurately communicate printable areas for graphic design, ArtiosCAD 12 is able to show the flap priorities of panels. For Re-Board® and multi-wall displays and designs, ArtiosCAD 12 can add edge bands for finished edge calculations and visualisation, along with building reverse v-notches with partial cuts for accurate conversion of these materials.

One of the fastest growing trends in the industry is Retail Ready & Shelf Ready packaging. IGD shopper research reported that over 90% of shoppers experienced products hard to find, damaged and unavailable. This is driving retailers toward implementing Retail Ready Packaging (RRP) and Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP). According to IGD Retail Analysis over 50% of suppliers facing an increased demand for those projects. Following these trends, ArtiosCAD 12 lets suppliers quickly and easily build RRP designs and automatically create stunning 3D animations. These can accurately show user-defined perforations and tear-away designs required in RRP packaging designs, in addition to the full set of common perforations.  Beta ArtiosCAD 12 customers reported saving hours of time with new automated animations of tear-aways and RRP designs.

The concept of Intelligent Dielines in ArtiosCAD 12 is a set of editing tools that enriches an ArtiosCAD file with detailed panel information, such as ‘Copy free’, along with placeholders for barcodes, nutrition facts and other pre-defined artwork. Brand owners can use the Intelligent Dielines features to communicate brand guidelines within their technical drawings, helping to improve communications between structural and graphic designers.

“ArtiosCAD 12 is fantastic. Esko added all the features that I needed, including some 3D rendering tools I suggested to them,” enthuses Peggy Underwood, Graphic Design Manager at Corrugated Container Corp., a company that focuses on POP and displays for product packaging. “I was trained as a graphic designer and knew that Intelligent Dielines would be very helpful as we send structural designs to graphic designers and ad agencies. Before, to assure designs would be correct, I manually placed the art orientation using Adobe® illustrator® and explained which panels would be printed. Now it’s all done with the click of a button. This probably cuts three-quarters of the time it took in the past.”

“No graphic designer is going to feel so helpless and confused again when looking at flat structure,” adds Underwood. “Some of our projects, including sales kits with many compartments, are very complicated and it is difficult to see which of the pieces are visible in the final layout. Now, there are ‘up’ and ‘down’ arrows to show orientation in the artwork. The 3D views with arrows help designers understand why a panel is in a certain direction. And, with all the 3D tools in ArtiosCAD and Esko Studio, we are able to show our art without having to produce mock-ups. The new Array and Collision tools make packing out our displays very quick and easy, saving us a ton of time.”

Supporting the supply chain downstream, ArtiosCAD 12 supports bi-directional communication between both CAPE and TOPS palletisation software packages. This eliminates the need for structural designers to re-enter data into both systems, removing wasted steps and any potential human error. Additionally the full pallet load can be visualized in ArtiosCAD 3D for high-resolution presentations and reports.

In an industry that is becoming more commoditised, sign and display shops are realizing that the uniqueness of 3D display projects offers higher margins. More and more companies are investing in ArtiosCAD for structural design. ArtiosCAD’s extensive library of resizable display designs helps designers so that they do not have to start from scratch designing new displays. The ArtiosCAD Tab & Slot tool ‘assembles’ components of a display with just a few clicks. The Mate tool helps to build and visualise connected folds and multiple parts. Users can identify glue areas and corresponding targets to quickly connect designs or perform simple assembly of displays. Curved Creases, a patent pending technology only available in ArtiosCAD, makes it easy for designers to work with curved folds and cuts by allowing them to visualize designs with curved creases as part of its 3D module. Support for thicker materials such as Re-board, along with correctly designing V-notches and edge bands makes it easier to visualize and convert designs of this material.

ArtiosCAD is available in two versions: the standard version and ArtiosCAD 12 Enterprise, enabling global “cloud” sharing and collaboration with WebCenter 12. With ArtiosCAD 12 Enterprise, all assets are centralised in a corporate private cloud, a secure web-accessible database enabling dynamic online collaboration between design groups, CAD and graphic designers, suppliers, brand owners and production. An easy to use online dashboard provides real-time feedback on project status, task lists and other parameters. An embedded design browser lets users easily search designs on production dies. To maintain file and project integrity, global and template-based project and document auto-numbering and naming allows the organisation to uniquely name each asset.

"I am also looking forward to the increased search ability in ArtiosCAD Enterprise, whether it is Internet or intranet based,” adds Pomles. “We have existing designs in our database and using ArtiosCAD Enterprise we now have a very quick searchable reference. While I certainly like getting design requests off the Internet, it is even a greater timesaver to be able to search existing designs. What used to take 10-15 minutes now takes as fast as I can type."

Mutoh Belgium announces plans for EcoPrint Show

Mutoh Belgium will be demonstrating several sustainable print solutions at the EcoPrint Show on stand 7-1.  The solutions on show have been developed to help print providers become greener and at the same time explore new business opportunities in digital print.  EcoPrint 2012 is the first event entirely focused to sustainability in the print industry.

Arthur Vanhoutte, President of Mutoh’s European Operations comments, “At Mutoh, we have, for a long time, been committed to sustainability and creating solutions that add commercial and environmental value for our customers and EcoPrint 2012 provides us with the focus and platform, in which to tell our sustainable story.  We look forward to explaining the key considerations to make for 'greening' print production.  We intend to display several sustainable print solutions including our printing systems for soft signage and direct-to-textile printing that offer considerable environmental credentials.”

Vanhoutte continues, “We think that the print company is under pressure to change and become sustainable but there are still plenty of products that pretend to be green when they are really not so green. We hope EcoPrint 2012 will contribute to discussion about issues affecting the effective adoption of sustainability in a print business.”

“Our core philosophy related to sustainability and ecology is to manufacture and supply greener print solutions which are economically viable and which help reducing waste, energy consumption and emissions, whilst simultaneously meeting the print provider’s required performance and application needs,” Vanhoutte concludes.

White Paper â€" How Green is Green?

In 2011, Mutoh released a white paper - available on its website at http://www.mutoh.be/01/MyDocuments - titled 'How Green is Green?'.  The report highlights the complexities of implementing sustainability and explains the perils of 'greenwashing'.
